Holistic Systems Engineering

At first glance, the term Holistic Systems Engineering seems like a redundant statement—much like tall giant (giant is sufficient to denote a tall man). After all, as we’ve described on this page, systems thinking is the backbone of systems engineering, so a holistic perspective is actually self-evident.

So why does the term Holistic Systems Engineering even exist? For example, because

• the implementation of systems engineering is often viewed primarily as a matter of process improvement,
• the understanding and definition of methods required prior to implementation are, unfortunately, often seen as a superfluous, unproductive endeavor focused on theory,
• the term “systems engineering” is increasingly used in marketing by software tool providers to convey the impression that all their tools can work together seamlessly and offer a consistent user experience—in other words, that they form a holistic tool ecosystem.

By using the term holistic in connection with systems engineering, we aim to convey that we address the challenges our customers face in an era of digital transformation, AI hype, and Asian technological strengths.
